The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified melanoma among «hot spots» in South Africa with the number of cases doubling from 2000 to 2015
As the map below shows, cases of melanoma rose from 30,500 in 1998 to more than 60,000 in 2홀덤015, with South Africa at the peak with 3.5 million new cases.
In the last couple of years, the area affected by melanoma has grown to the extent that the number of people being diagnosed with melanoma in South Africa has doubled from 2000 to 2015.
Of the 2.1 million cases identified in 2014, about 14,000 were classified as «hot spots». More than 500 new cases, however, were also attributed to «previous non-melanoma skin cancer»
The biggest hotspots are in the cities of Durban (250,000 new cases and 4,000 deaths) and Johannesburg (25,000 new cases and 1,800 deaths). The number of deaths due to melanoma has also increased by 20% between 2008 and 2016
As reported by the AfriForum, one-third of all people diagnosed with melanoma are black
Dr Ben van der Leun, the head of the WHO’s Office of Surveillance and the Environment, says it is likely that the recent increase in melanoma cases in South Africa is a result of the introduction of chemotherapy which is currently being used on white patients in South Africa.
«Over the last decade, we’ve seen the use of a number of treatments including new combinations of drugs or combinations of different chemotherapy agents, and this has caused some increases in cases, but overall the overall increase in our population of patients having melanoma has decreased since 2008,» he said.
«Our study shows that a number of people were treated with different types of drugs and they’ve all caused increases in melanoma cases.»
However, he said that the cancer-stricken population in South Africa does not need to wait for the new treatment.
«This does not mean that melanoma is not still a problem, because there are still people, particularly those on cancer-targeting drugs, who still need this care, whi카지노쿠폰ch we’re investing heavily to provide more care to them.»
