KENOSHA, WI (Kenny Rogers) – After the first year as President of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), President Barack Obama has taken action to end the slaughter of elephants in their countries. In August 2014 the US Fish and Wildlife Service published its final rule, allowing the import of elephant ivory from Zimbabwe for the sole purpose of carving horns for Chinese men’s traditional medicine, a practice that is illegal in the US. However, the Humane Society of the United States has been working with the Department of Agriculture on ways that we can reverse the impact of the last few years of the Obama Administration’s actions and save thousands of elephants to be used to cut our way to climate change.
«We’re thrilled that Obama has decided to move away from an illegal trade and save millions of elephants to be used in cutting carbon emissions for the climate,» said Dr. Marcy Wheeler, Director of Conservation Education at the Humane Society of the United States. «We are hopeful that USDA will listen to the cries from communities to see if they are ready for the changes to come to the killing of elephants.»
